Herbert M. Greer
Apr 9, 2018Greer, 87, of Lewistown, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with his best friend and wife of nearly 63 years on March 30, 2018, in an assisted living facility in Helena. Since her death in 2012, he has longed to join her and is now at peace.Herb was born Aug. 2, 1930 in Damascus, Virginia, the son of Claude and Carrie (Widener) Greer. On Aug. 29, 1949, he was united in marriage to June A. (Ayers). He retired as a Tech SGT in the United States Air Force where he was in charge of the dining facility. Herb was stationed at numerous Air Force bases, including overseas tours in Korea, Morocco and Libya. He retired in 1970 after 20 years of honorable service with the U.S. Air Force. In 1973, he moved his family to Lewistown, Montana where he lived until September 2014, after which time he moved to Helena.Herb enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, hunting and being a master gunsmith. Some of his other interests included attending yard sales, flea markets and gun shows.He is survived by his daughters Carrie (Porter) Strausburg of Hanover, Indiana, Sherry Martin of Billings, Mont., Gale (Keith) Greer-Kramlick of Helena, Mont. and Collette (Peter) Greer-Ziolkowski of Billings, Mont.; sons Herbert M. Jr. of Denton, Mont. and Byrne (Chris) of Florence, Mont.; nine grandchildren: Jessica (Michael) Martin-Biggins, Stefan (Maggie) Ziolkowski, Teal (Julien) Pates, Kayce (Neil) Koehler, Kevin Kramlick, Justin Martin, Jason (Tara) Martin, Beth and Josh Hunter; ten great-grandchildren: Morella and Ruby Ziolkowski, Azaelya and Brookzyn Pates, Jaden and Kenyon Martin, Sophie Martin, and Tyzer, Tanner and Trevin Koehler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.Herb was preceded in death by his wife, June A. in 2012 and his son-in-law, Kenneth W. Martin.At his request cremation has taken place and his family will celebrate his life in a private ceremony.
